Following his swearing in Buka, Ishmael Toroama, President for the Autonomous Bougainville Government has announced a three persons caretaker Government for next 14 days. He will be joined by the new Member for Halia Patrick Nisira as Vice President and Women’s Representative South Bougainville Therese Kaetavara as a Ministers in the care taker Government. “After 14 days I will announce my full Government as well as my policies and directives” – said Toroama.
Prime Minister James Marape witnessed the swearing in of the new Bougainville House of Representatives and President-elect Ishmael Toroama, and acknowledged his significant contribution to the peace process over more than two decades.
James Marape presented K15 million to the new Bougainville government for its public service to kick-start its process for economic independence and empowerment. He told the people of Bougainville that it was time they built their own police and judiciary. “Me coming to Bougainville is a positive signal that we care for Bougainville. I was waiting for the election process to be completed so I could ramp up my personal and Government support to Bougainville” – Marape said. [1]

People in Central Bougainville’s Ioro constituency plan to discuss the massive damage to the environment caused by the Panguna mine with the operator Rio Tinto, says member-elect Theonila Roka Matbob. “We want Rio Tinto to take up the responsibility (for the waste) and meet with us for a roundtable talk”. It is one of her priorities as she starts working on her plan to develop Ioro and deal with the effects of the abandoned mine.
