Australia has thanked Papua New Guinea for its support to Australia’s emergency bushfire response through the provision of military personnel from the PNG Defence Force. The 100 men and women soldiers that form team Kumul Force 17 have left the Papua New Guinea shores for Townsville, to form a joint engineer element of Task Force 646 in what is now known as “Operation Halivim Wantok”. Prime Minister James Marape expressed his appreciation to Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison, for accepting PNG’s offer to help in the devastating bushfires.

Prime Minister James Marape officially launched the fundraising appeal team called ‘PNG hearts for Australia fire appeal 2020’ at Hilton Hotel in Port Moresby. This is the only co-ordination team that has been formally approved by the government. The Committee has so far raised K450,000.

The National Capital District Commission has donated K20,000 for the Australian bushfire appeal in Port Moresby. City manager Bernard Kipit presented the cheque to the chairman of the committee, PNG Heart for Australia Fire Appeal, Paul Nerau.

Opposition leader Belden Namah has made an appeal to the 110 districts to donate K100,000 each to those affected by the bushfires in Australia.

Chimbu Province is on a fundraising drive to help the people of Australia who have been hit hard by the bushfires. A fundraising committee was set up for that purpose.

The Vanimo-Green district in West Sepik Province has given K100,000 to the PNG Red Cross for the Australian Bushfire Appeal. Secretary general of PNG Red Cross, Uvenama Rova, said all donations made to the humanitarian organisation will be transferred to the Australian Red Cross to assist those in need.

The Enga provincial government through the leadership of Sir Peter Ipatas donated K300,000 to the Papua New Guinea Australia Alumni Association to help victims of Australia bushfires.
