Bougainville. Papua New Guinea press review
The Bougainville Copper Ltd. mining company has welcomed Anglo-Australian multinational corporation Rio Tinto’s willingness to discuss with stakeholders social and environment issues associated with the Panguna mine which ceased operations in 1989. These questions had been a concern for the people of Bougainville, in particular those living in the Panguna area. A statement from BCL said Rio Tinto was responding to a complaint lodged by the Human Rights Law Centre on behalf of residents and communities in Bougainville. « The Bougainville Copper Ltd of today is very different from the company of the past, as it is now predominantly locally-owned after Rio Tinto’s entire shareholding was transferred to the ABG and the Government in 2016». Moreover, Prime Minister of Papua New Guinea Hon. James Marape said during the inauguration of the Autonomous Region of Bougainville (ARB) President Ishmael Toroama in Buka that the Government’s 36.4%share would be transferred to the people of Bougainville: 17.4 % to the landowners and 19% to the ARB. In turn, ARB President Ishmael Toroama urged Bougainvilleans to continue to support the ARB in its efforts on Bougainville’s self-determination aspiration and former Bougainville regional MP Joe Lera has urged losing candidates in the presidential election to support the new ARB President. [2]
A planned national reconciliation between Bougainville and Papua New Guinea is being discussed District Peace and Security Committee forum held in Buka during this week. The forum brought together committee members from North, Central and South Bougainville to discuss strategies for effective management of outstanding peace and reconciliation activities across Bougainville. [3]
Bougainville president Ishmael Toroama has maintained four key ministers from the previous Momis government in his new ABG government. Ezekiel Massat – the Minister for Justice, Attorney General and Post Referendum Dialogue and Consultation; Robert Hamal Sawa – the new Minister for Lands, Physical Planning and Environment; former vice president in the Momis government, Raymond Masono, – the Minister for health; former education Minister Thomas Pa’ataku – the new Minister for Community Government. Two female members have been also name in the full cabinet of the Bougainville Executive Council. President’s Ishmael Toroma’s one of the missions to increase appreciation and recognition of the dynamic role of women have in Bougainville society. The newly elected President the Autonomous Region of Bougainville also intends to help our young and upcoming population to fully realize their potential. [5]
