The United Nations (UN) has reaffirmed their commitment to work other development partners and the Government of Papua New Guinea (PNG) to support a more inclusive and sustainable growth. In his independence message, UN’s Resident Coordinator Mr. Gianluca Rampolla marked that «since 1975, Papua New Guinea has been an active and engaged member state of the United Nations: together we have worked to improve the lives of people, especially the most marginalized and vulnerable, making sure women and girls are respected and can live free from violence, leaving no one behind». According to Mr. Rampolla, in the last three years, the country’s resilience to facing the devastating Highlands Earthquake, the outbreak of polio and the recent COVID-19 pandemic is admirable. The UN is also privileged to support the conduct of the historic Bougainville Referendum 2019. [1]

The Government of Papua New Guinea is talking to Australia about allowing back PNG workers shut out after the border closures. According to Treasurer Ian Ling-Stuckey, PNG recently set up a labour mobility unit which is waiting to send workers to Australia when the borders are reopened: « In the first three months of 2020, we had more workers in Australia than we sent in 2018, » stated Mr. Ling-Stuckey and also added that PNG «was on track to send up to a thousand workers to Australia and New Zealand». Mr. Ling-Stuckey also said that governors Allan Bird (East Sepik Province), Gary Juffa (Northern/Oro Province) and William Powi (Southern Highlands Province) were ready to send workers to Australia in 2021. «Our climate and diversified agricultural base means we have experienced farm workers, » Treasurer said.
